The BRAINCITY Center of Excellence for Neural Plasticity and Brain Disorders in Warsaw has launched a new project aimed at developing innovative strategies for treating brain diseases, including epilepsy, depression, and addiction. The official inauguration took place on October 14 at the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
The project is being implemented thanks to the support of the Foundation for Polish Science, which has allocated nearly PLN 30 million from the European Funds for Smart Economy (FENG) programme, under the International Research Agendas Programme (MAB).
Scientific research at BRAINCITY addresses one of the most pressing challenges of modern civilization. Brain diseases affect millions of people worldwide, with their total annual cost in the European Union estimated at over EUR 800 billion.
In Poland, BRAINCITY, operating at the Nencki Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, is the leading research centre in this field. The center was established in 2019 under the MAB programme of the Foundation for Polish Science, financed by the Smart Growth Operational Programme.
Now, with further support from the FENG programme, the center will be able to advance research into innovative treatments for neuroplasticity disorders.
The new project includes, among other initiatives, the creation of a modern platform for testing brain stimulation methods and substances with therapeutic potential. Its aim is not only to improve our understanding of brain function, but also to develop new methods for diagnosing and treating disorders such as epilepsy, depression, addiction, autism spectrum disorders, and schizophrenia.
