In numerous medical procedures, such as biopsy or radiotherapy, there is a high demand for contrasting reference markers. Developing a technology that enables a high standard of imaging while simultaneously ensuring the safety of both the patient and medical staff remains a challenge. Markers currently available on the market are mainly made of gold and are characterized by rigidity that leads to the irritation of surrounding tissues. Furthermore, standard markers require the use of ionizing radiation, which also increases exposure to harmful radiation for both patients and healthcare personnel.

As part of the grant, a medical reference marker for bimodal imaging using X-ray techniques and near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) is being developed. The heterogeneous internal structure and patented composition of the marker's components provide a unique combination of properties, including biodegradability, a stable signal, and long-term stability for use.

The creator of this solution is Dr. Eng. Żaneta Górecka, a participant in the first edition of PRIME - a science commercialization support program implemented by the Foundation for Polish Science using funds from the European Funds for a Modern Economy (FENG) program. As part of the PRIME project, the researcher and her team - Dr. Eng. Emilia Choińska (Business Leader) and Justyna Kacprzak (Technology Transfer Officer) - will develop competencies toward the implementation of the bimodal imaging medical reference marker.

PRIME is the only "tailor-made" acceleration program for the transfer of knowledge and technology for scientists and their research organizations in Poland, offering support for an individual commercialization path for innovative products. The program provides the opportunity to both develop competencies (e.g., training) and acquire practical skills (e.g., talks with potential recipients). For the authors of the best ideas, individualized support is provided to implement the chosen commercialization path.
