Blood, Flow, and Algorithms – How Computers Are Helping Fight Thrombosis
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the lower limbs is a common condition influenced by the physical characteristics of blood flow. However, standard clinical practice usually does not take into account detailed data on blood flow through blood vessels, which limits the possibility of personalized treatment.
A computer modeling tool being developed by Dr. Magdalena Otta from Sano - Centre for Individualized Computational Medicine enables the analysis of a patient's individual hemodynamics based on a created digital twin of their circulatory system. Simulating blood flow parameters based on standard medical images can support doctors in effectively treating DVT and reducing the risk of post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) and recurrent DVT. By linking the shape of individual patients' veins with flow characteristics, the tool can also be used in prevention, enabling disease risk estimation and supporting therapeutic decisions. The goal of the project is to introduce advanced simulation methods into everyday clinical practice to improve treatment outcomes through personalized analysis.
Magdalena Otta is a participant in the first edition of PRIME - a science commercialization support program implemented by the Foundation for Polish Science using funds from the European Funds for a Modern Economy (FENG) program. As part of the PRIME project, the researcher and her team-Dr. Dominik Czaplicki (Technology Transfer Manager) and Dr. Katarzyna Baliga-Nicholson (Business Leader)-will develop competencies in the implementation and commercialization of their research.
